Hi folks. After lengthy inspection and test drive I have discovered the serious oil leak is coming from the front crankshaft seal. After test drive I could see a fresh stream of "clean" oil coming from behind the cambelt and running along the sump. So the good news - I don't have to replace the cylinder head cover gasket - I don't think the weep here has got any worse.!

THE BAD NEWS - front lock carrier etc has to come off as well as the v-belts and cambelts! Ah well, this will be the third time I will have done this so its familiar ground. The seal removal/replacement looks straight forward enough ...BUT I CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE ON-LINE TO BUY THE 3201, 3202, 3203 AND 3265 CRANKSHAFT SEAL REMOVAL TOOLS.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I COULD HIRE THESE - OR BUY EQUIVALENT OR ALTERNATIVE TOOLS???

CRASHER - WHAT DO YOU USE? IF YOU HAVE THEM WOUILD YOU CONSIDER RENTING THEM OUT TO ME - HAPPY TO GIVE YOU A BIG DEPOSIT ONTOP OF THE RENTAL COSTS!

    Hope to hear from someone.

It means your car was probably built before the 18-02-2002 and has the early seal plate. Normally you find this is not the seal itself but the steel gasket 059 103 161 E £7.22 between the ally plate and iron block which corrodes at the bulged top right corner as you look at it and a couple of millimetres of gasket is all that seals the main crank bearing oil feed drilling. Replacing the gasket means you have to drop the upper sump which is a huge job entailing dropping the subframe and the gasket is superseded by goo D 176 404 M2 at £25.83. I have seen people attempt to do it by cutting the gasket and using silicone but it gets pushed back into the sump when trying to get the plate onto the dowels. Use a new seal 054 115 147 B £8.30 and these are Teflon so quite delicate and it is critical that the crank nose is sleeved to guide it on and that any surface it passes over including its running one is surgically clean and dry, not even a trace of oil or it WILL fail. Just realised those prices are plus VAT, I don’t have ETKA or ELSA at home or Mrs Crasher gets grumpy.

Fortuanately I have a June 2002 build and it definitely looks like the crank seal. Crasher, do you use the VAG 3203 Seal Extractor tool? I can get hold of one on-line but have seen a post that says its not very good. Alternative would be do use a dremmel to drill a couple of holes in the old seal and then screw in self-tappers and pull to extract. What do you recommend?

I have got it, used it once, took a chunk out of the holder and went back to self tappers.... BUT they only work on the old traditional rubber seals. The new Teflon type (which I think it will have, I need to check Elsa) have nothing behind what you see until the thin metal sleeves radiused edge so the self tapper just pulls out so I only do them after removing the cover and tap them out from behind with a bearing drift tool. Be very sure that the hump is not leaking, an oil leak from the seal will not tend to run quickly and will get thrown around all over the back of the pulley flinging it everywhere and it is only under crankcase pressure when the holder leaks it runs and drips and it is under oil system pressure.
