    Hi everyone,

just joined and hope you can help.

    i got a Audi A8 2014 4.2TDI.

got fault code 9814-sensor 1 for exhaust bank 1 G235.

I went to TPS with this information and bought the sensor.i fitted it this weekend. i am not a mechanic by any means but as this one was on top of the engine i did it myself. cut a long story short, it was the wrong sensor.
I then rang Audi this morning and they said i need to bring the car in so they can find out which sensor it is manually by unscrewing them.
so i said, whats the point of having vagcom computer that tells you what sensor it is if you got to do it manually.
surely sensor 1 for exhaust bank 1 should tell you which sensor it is and where it is located.
i have done some research today and realize they there are quite a few exhaust temperature sensors on my car but each one has a different part number. i now know my car has 2 banks of exhaust sensor because its a V8 so that in itself eliminates half of them.
the bloke in parts said,if it is the one,he thinks it is,it will cost £2000 plus vat and £150 for sensor.

so can anybody help me to try and identify which sensor is sensor 1 for exhaust bank 1 please.

    thanks.

    Andy

What is the part number of the sensor and which side did you fit it? There is no point throwing VAGCOM at the dealer, most will have no idea about what you are talking about as for many years it has been called VCDS and secondly it is a non approved aftermarket cut price rival free to use system compared to the VAG ODIS system that costs 10 Euro per hour to use (per machine) plus each dongle costs £1k so a system which puts their livelihood at risk at a fraction of the cost, think about that from the point of view in how you earn a living.

As it's No1 sensor would have thought it would be on the exhaust manifold before the turbo.

If you can find the sensor, remove the electrical connector then run VCDS again.

The fault will change to " Short to + or Short to ground " for the sensor you have disconnected.

This is a twin turbo unit, the CTEC engine and yes G235 is screwed into the right hand turbo, part number 057 906 088 P which retails at £156.61 inc VAT. The wires going to it are brown/green and yellow. The job of accessing this sensor is huge and worse on the 204 than the 2013, you have to remove all the front section of the exhaust, Y pipe, DPF etc which means dropping the subframe. The official Elsapro time is 940 time units, i.e 9 and a half hours and that is highly optimistic based on a brand new car with all the tools and parts at the ready and the tech having done the job many times prior so it could easily double if fasteners are rusty and things go wrong.... evil nasty job.

Thank you very much for your help. that has answered my question. The part number you just mentioned is right.
The sensor i fitted was part number 05A906088 which i fitted myself on sunday but when i rescanned it on vcds, the fault was still there.
i rang TPS on tuesday and explained they supplied me with the wrong sensor, they said i should of gave them more details and then came up with the same part number as you.
    here is the fault code.

    Crasher.

    Thank you for your help.

i will say this..your knowledge of this engine is priceless..there is one thing in life, you cant buy knowledge...if you could, you would be a billionaire..

What you have told me in 3 emails is more than 5 audi dealerships have not told me in 2 months..

What you replaced was the G98 Exhaust Gas Re-circulation temperature sender, there is also the G495 (EGT 3), G648 (EGT 4), G448 (EGT 2) for bank one and G236, G449, G497 and G649 for bank 2... so nine EGT sensors at around £155 each and most are evil to get at. It is an example of the diesel engine gone mad.

    hiya.

    thanks for your help.

i have ordered part number 057 906 088 P. so this part should be the part needed for the above fault code. hopefully.

i cant understand why TPS gave me that other sensor when as the fault clearly says, sensor 1 temp bank 1 G235.

Is bank 1 on the drivers side.

When you put the code G235 (well any of them really) in the search function it highlights them all and does not differentiate, you need to use the elSawin current flow diagrams and component locations to carefully work it out against the ETKA diagrams and when there are nine of them it is confusing, TPS don't have access to this data and barely anyone there knows anything about cars. It is not unusual for TPS to ring us and ask me to help them pin point the part number. The G235 code is what ETKA calls an "SDC-Code" which as far as I can find out stands for "Service Diagnose Code". Are you going to fit it yourself?

you knowledge knows no bounds. thanks for all your help. i dont know what i would of done without you.

no,i am not going to fit it,this has to be done from underneath as you know and i haven`t got a ramp.i wouldn`t have the knowledge to fit this one. so am going to get a local Audi specialist in Gloucester to do it.i know you said it is a lot of work to do

Audi there-selves want £2160 labour only to do it.
