I have just replaced all the cam belts, v-belts, tensioners, idlers, tstat and water pump for the second time now - 200k miles! Can't see me doing it again (280k!!) but one never knows.
Any way, when I was reinstalling the exhauster pump at the back of the left side camshaft I wondered what this part does.
Can someone tell me? If you look at where it fits, it slots into the back of the cam - ie the cam is driving the pump - unless there,is some sort of clutch device, the pump gets driven hard.
I just wondered what it does - tried Googling but nothing on it.

Crasher - you obviously don't pop off the cam sprockets when changing the belts. The exhauster pump has to be removed before you can insert the left hand locking plate!

I was asking for a picture of the part you were referring to, do you mean the exhauster (vacuum) pump itself? I have done more 2.5 VEP V6 TDI cam belt than you can shake a stick at... Do you release the cam belt sprockets?

Sure do - last two times I have done it. The reason I asked was in 2012 was my first cam belt change - 147k miles. Before that, Audi Edinburgh did it (80K) and when I got the covers off I could see the "old school" tippex method was used by them - ie. cam sprockets not popped off! As the manual states, using this method you will have uneven tension across the cam belt - not good and could lead to failure. Glad to see you agree with the manual!
So, now we know the part we are talking about, what does this exhauster (vacuum) pump actually do? I do not have a mechninc's background but can follow a manual! Would appreciate some education!

Servo brakes? On a petrol these would generally use vacuum from the intake manifold but there would little vacuum in the intake manifold of a diesel and when turbocharged it would presumably be at +ve pressure, hence the need for a vacuum pump.

Yes the vacuum pump is required for the brakes as diesels do not develop an inlet manifold vacuum like a petrol with a throttle body, and that's all changing as well. Not only is the vacuum required for the brakes but the turbo vanes, EGR valve and manifold flap are also operated by vacuum.

Many thanks to you too Crasher. Its amazing to think how fast that pump is being driven by the camshaft! Don't know if you do, but I replace the large and small O-rings of the pump when re-installing - the small one (smaller than the nail of my pinkie) cost £5!!
Anyway, have now done 50 miles with the new kit so fingers crossed! Again, after 75k, the aircon belt was shot and ready to break. Was a Gates belt and had a a 1cm chunk out of it and was cracked the whole way round! Tensioner seemed ok mind you. I really think the aircon belt should be changed every 40k miles!
