    hi there,

so i hit something in the road and smashed the sump. i drove about a mile and stayed at my friends for the night went to my car in the morning where i then realised there was oil everywhere and nothing happened when i turned the key. the car has been sat over winter (yes i know very bad idea and i'm now trying to fix it.) my dad was diagnosed with cancer so life and death took priority. i've replaced the sump and battery. it starts and then cuts out. i have also refilled with oil obviously. sounds quite rough when it does start but i think that's to be expected.

it has been on wooden ramps so slightly tilted over winter so im wondering if its something to do with the fuel? air lock? ****** fuel settlement? im not an expert but im good at researching and fixing . i cant afford to take it to a garage - my husband and his uncle and my neighbour are currently faffing about with it but any advice would be soooo helpful and greatly appreciated. i need this little car back on the road as i have changed my volunteering for womans aid from one county to another so we desperately need two cars again. its only got 58,000 miles on the clock, was owned from brand new by my friends dad just for tootling around in, full service history and is still super razzy or rather it was and i got it for a steal. i just hope i haven't totally broken it and somehow can fix it........

    many thanks.. Dan. x x x

If the engine has been run without oil there could be all sorts of damage. Very difficult to tell without having a mechanic look at it. If you are lucky the timing belt may have slipped but you really need to get it looked at. Worse case you need a new engine.

If it starts and then immediately stops, see if the key warning light in the dash is flashing. When stood dead with a flat battery for a long time it is not unknown for the dash to lose the immobiliser coding of the key. Also if you have two keys, try the other one.
Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.
