I have from new 2016 150 GT Estate and was looking forward to possibly another, it would be my 5th new Passat Estate.

But I was dismayed to discover the GT had gone.

So the SEL has a list price of 34K. When you add metallic and delivery, plus add in the missing GT items i.e., 18 inch alloys, Climate Control, Ambient lighting and Panoramic Sunroof, you are looking at a price of ……..37.5K.

Okay, this is before possible discounts, but the equivalent price of my GT just under 3 years ago was 28K.

I think VW are beginning to price themselves out of the market on this one.

I suspect VW have found the GT and R-Line are too close in spec as they are broadly similar but one is built for comfort the other for people who think a saloon car should be ‘sporty’ - the obvious solution is to go for the R-Line which has much of the spec the GT had as standard, not the panoramic roof but it does now have keyless entry and boot release, and a heated steering wheel; if buying once the discounts come in they’ll be sub £30k for a DSG 190TDi (less for the 150 once prices have been released) - The Oxford wheels are £300 on the R-Line and look much nicer than the Monterey wheels fitted as standard.

EDIT; also, the estate is over £1,800 more than the saloon - has that always been the case as it sounds like a hell of a lot of money!

One thing is for sure, as a used buyer it will be a pre-facelift car for me rather than post facelift.

Did sporty in my younger days, sometimes embarrassingly outrageous, but now I am retired I am definitely in the camp that thinks a car should be for comfort

There’s nothing sporty about a family car but it does seem to be a bit of an obsession amongst some.

Skoda have updated the Superb to S, SE, SE-L L&K and Sportline too - the SE-L has lost some items from the old SE-L Executive (Columbus sat nav which is VW Discovery Pro but still has the standard Amundsen), tri-zone climate (but has bi-zone). The 190 DSG retails at £33k which will be £27k when the discounts kick in.

Maybe it’s time to go Superb.

I have vaguely looked at the Superb that has just been released but there is no manual version, I have queried this with Skoda and they confirm only DSG. I spoke to local dealer and he says decision is mad but he thinks there is a manual to come but just not confirmed.

Whilst I do not want a sports equipped car, I still have sportiness in my blood and for that reason would not wish to own a DSG as it takes some of the fun away!

prices for the Passat manual haven’t been released yet either - they are shown in the brochure with a ‘TBA’. The difference is that Skoda don’t show them, I suspect when the manual models are released both companies will update their publishing!

One of the things I like about the GT is the Active Info Display, a big feature for me.

As stated previously it is only standard on the R Line Edition with a list price of 45K

You can add it onto other models but it is £2200 as part of Navigation Pro!

One way to make customers really unhappy is to give them something good and then take it away.

As of today the new EVO 150bhp TDi engine is available in the configurator. 106g/km CO2 with DSG gearbox. It's been alluded to in a few places that it's RDE2 compliant (hence does not incur the 4% BIK diesel levy), but no hard data on that yet.

Looking on the configurator also notices that the SEL and R-Line don’t have the ambient lighting (not a deal breaker but it is nice) nor the Ergo comfort drivers seat which is a huge bonus to me - it’s a grand to spec it!

When the time comes I will be looking at 18, 68 or 19 plate GT BITDi Estate models...assuming there are any out there!

I'm not convinced that the spec lists are entirely accurate yet. E.g. apparently the SE comes with wireless CarPlay, but that gets deleted when you add SatNav. There are discrepancies between the spec list you get when you examine the list for each model compared to the list you get at the end of the configurator.

The pricelist hs 'No' in the RDE2 column for all models/engines (so why bother with that column?) but the CO2 and BiK columns still have 'TBA' for the 150ps TDi EVO. Given how much crowing there has been about this engine meeting all known future specs one would have thought it would be RDE2. I messaged VW on Facebook and got a fairly prompt reply saying it's not RDE2 and referring me to the pricelist, so I suspect that the replybot has simply reiterated what is in the price list.

RDE2 knocks 4% off the BiK rate for company car users, so it's potentially a big deal.
