Time for service one of my cars (VW Passat 2.0 TDI, 2012), so i bought a set of oil filters, and cut some open to compare.

No suprises actually, the original VAG is a Mahle and the cheep Bosch is most likely also the same..

Here is a video of it:
Comparision of oil filters for VAG EA189 2.0 TDi engine - YouTube

    VAG Original, 20 EUR
    Mahle, 17 EUR
    Knecht, 13.50 EUR
    Bosch, 7.90 EUR
    SCT, 5 EUR
    Blueparts, 4.90 EUR

The o-rings are still soaking in brakefluid, I'll return to look at them later this week.

    Cheers

Nope, just want to make a informed decision on spare parts that more than others can affect and influence the longevity of my car.

Also, consider the amount of time I saved you and everyone else who now dont have to cut open oil filters for the EA189..

I'd like to see a Hengst filter in comparison if you have the time and inclination...

Just looking at the printing, and feeling the materials doesn't really prove they are the same. The difference between the best and substandard products is probably much more subtle, such as the porosity of the filter material and special coatings etc., which can really only be tested in a laboratory.

I don't quite see the relevance of soaking O-rings for an oil filter in brake fluid.

We stick to genuine almost exclusively so no one can wag a finger at our choice and the price difference is minimal.
