Not to mention the exploding BXE engine issue.

    Hmm...

Don’t go there, as in... been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

This is on the replacement BXE engine after having previously had a con-rod issue / broken engine issue a while back...

Jack off side up, put it in 4th gear, turn os wheel by hand , can you feel compression on cylinder 4 compression stroke ? If not you have lost compression on that cylinder.
I would try this first as it is quick cheap and easy.

    Hi there,

Thanks for the advice and suggestion - good idea... not done that yet, but initial thoughts from garage are not thought to be lack of compression as the problem comes and goes.

It can drive and run perfectly all day and then another time it has this vibration, then it can be fine again.

Just posted this thread and then I read yours. The main electrical wiring harness is easy to see from the front of the engine.

This post is to inform others if they may be experiencing this issue of their car going to limp mode/shutting down while driving. Approximately 4 months ago, with about 175k miles, I was noticing that the car was shuddering/jerking intermittently. I had recently had my
timing belt changed, so I thought maybe it was off a tooth. Then I began doing research online and thought it was my MAF sensor. I cleaned it and no change. After more research, I thought it was my DMF as it was knocking and needed to be changed. Changed the DMF, issue still present. I then heard it could be my EGR or DPF. I plugged in an OBDII and no codes were found.

I went to visit a friend and he did a quick search online and found a post that revealed the problem:

The main engine wire harness that goes between the engine block and oil filter - was melted against the engine block and was causing a short.

Here is the link to that post: Passat B6 CBAB engine cut off while driving - Page 2

Here is a picture of my wire harness:

The fix: Pulled it away from the block. There was no major compromise of the wiring, so I will likely be adding new heat tape. Since pulling it away from the block, I have not been able to replicate the fault.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

Garage suggested an injector wiring harness beneath the rocker cover.

The car is at the garage and waiting to hear the findings.

Seems that he did - loom melted and contacting hot engine. Happened to me on my PD where the turbo actuator loom dropped onto the turbo heat shield and started to melt. Engine cut out, hard to start, higher revs, subsequent cut outs, vibration and a crankshaft sensor fault (red herring as it happens). Re-insulated the wires and made sure the loom was fixed in position properly.
