1.9 BXE diesel cut-out & not starting - Help please

Hi there,

Can anyone help please- 2008 Passat 1.9 TDI BXE engine, the engine suddenly cut-out when driving, would not restart. No dash faults etc.

RAC tried banging on fuel tank for fuel pump issues, no problem.

RAC connected diagnostic, stating fault code P3007 for Camshaft sensor no signal. Recovered back as no garages open Easter Sunday. Fitted a FACET brand replacement today from Eurocarparts as open again after Bank Holiday.

Engine still won’t start, it just cranks but as soon as key is pressed in a an exclamation mark and the cruise control dial symbol appears in the red multi display in the middle of the dash between the dials. It is not the cruise control light that normally appears when in use. On one cranking attempt, a red oil can symbol also flashed up once, but the engine is full of oil to the dipstick mark and it didn’t appear again.

Any ideas, would appreciate any help as RAC won’t come out again as it is an existing fault now and can’t now get the car to a garage.

Ignore the oil pressure warning, the 3C shows an error when under prolonged cranking so it is a red herring. A cam position sensor G40 code no signal would not normally prevent the engine starting. The fuel pump may be new but can you hear it running?

Thanks for your reply and suggestion, I am not sure as I didn’t go under the car, but assume that the RAC man was satisfied when under the car. Is there any way of checking fuel presence at a hose or somewhere under the bonnet? There’s no hand primer which is on another diesel car.

Tried it again this evening and now in addition the display flashes up Parking Brake Failure, even though it works and can hear it going off and on, but also Emission Warning on the big red display, all the while still showing the Exclamation mark in the bottom left of the panel.

Is it all related and something electrical perhaps? The Emission message is very odd, the car doesn’t have a DPF.

When you turn on the ignition the tank pump should run for a few seconds, you should be able to hear that.

You could disconnect the pipe from the pump & check there is fuel flow.

The other faults now showing up could be a result of the battery now becoming tired after the starting attempts.
Once the battery voltage starts to fall, other modules can start to flag up non-existant faults.

If you have fuel flow the next step would be a VCDS read, & in the mean time get the battery charged.

The battery could be getting weak, modern starter motors will spin an engine over on voltages that will not allow the ECU to inject fuel and this can throw people. Mind you, I am surprised the RAC chap didn't sell you a battery, call them out for a flat tyre and you'll get the battery sales patter!

Noted, but the car just cut out whilst driving normally and won’t start again, it just turns pretty quickly on the starter when operated and does not fire at all. I can’t really see the battery causing the engine to just cut out in the first instance when driving along the road.

Hoping to try and borrow a fault code reader from a friend, hopefully will give more of a clue - where is the diagnostic connector port and is it just a case of plugging in and reading or do I need to do anything or press something etc?

The diagnostic plug is under the dash above you right shin, if it is a generic code reader it may miss the fault such as a failed crank speed senor which is a common cause of sudden breakdown.

Thanks for advising.

Borrowed an Autel reader from a friend and connecting up, I get one code P0600 serial communication link $07E8.
Nothing else, still see the red exclamation mark in the bottom left of the display but also now a yellow flashing steering wheel symbol and beeping after taking out the key.

Seems to suggest an electrical fault?

As I suspected, I think the reader is missing something but the code stored and the other symptoms do suggest a low voltage problem, can you charge the battery?

Thanks for the previous suggestions.

After recovery by a garage, advised that they changed the fuel pump in the tank despite assurances beforehand by RAC it wasn’t that but was the camshaft sensor, which was replaced and didn’t solve it. Not sure about all the faults though.

However, the story doesn’t end there... after a couple of weeks running, the engine occasionally ran with a light vibration that could be felt through the whole car when driving or even at idle, it wasn’t permanent. Would run fine some days.

Then one day it wouldn’t start no matter how many attempts made.

Garage this time seem to say they managed to start after extended trying and then has started first time every time since whilst there. Fault code reader apparently says misfire cylinder 4, current thoughts they have are an internal injector wiring harness.

Does this seem correct as after several hundred pounds so far and the prospect of further expense, the car has it seems become totally unreliable.
