    Hi,

I have a front left rattle but only when changing road surfaces/rough road between 20-60mph. Motorway is fine, and speed humps/bumps at low speeds there's no noise. Definitely just the one side. Everything I've googled seems not to fit (ie it doesn't happen over slow bumps).

    2009 Estate. Any ideas?

Usually it is the anti roll bar drop link lower joint.

Well I've had it on a lift, and there's nothing obvious.. ..

But I recently had new discs and pads, so I took the wheel off and the disc isn't screwed to the hub. Could that do it? And where would I get a screw?!

The screw is irrelevant when the wheel is bolted on as it holds everything together.

Mine has a similar rattle noise which I think is the anti-roll bar link as one side was done for the MOT and now it is the other side doing it.

Gave all the bars a good tug when on the ramp today and everything seemed solid to the mechanic and myself. Wait for it to get worse I suppose!!

Well it's a Volkswagen so it'll either mysteriously go away or something will fall off! Life is certainly interesting driving these cars.

Check your springs carefully - all of them - from top to bottom as sometimes the small coils top or bottom rust through, break off and small pieces end up in the strut cup (front) or wishbone recess (rear) but the springs extend and jam back onto the mounts making them look normal. Also check your steering by rocking it back and forth with the steering lock disengaged to see if there is excess noise / knocking. Might not be the steering rack itself although wear is common but the inner tie rod ball joints. Also with the car on the ground reach behind the wheels and grasp the driveshafts shaking them in all directions to see if any play, there should be virtually none as worn inner cv / tripod joints common especially the OS one which extends from the gearbox on the left hand side of the car to the right hand wheel so noise would appear to be on the NS.

Let us know if you find anything.

PS Don't go cheap with the drop links - the TRW ones for example are reasonably chunky but budget ones so much thinner.

I fitted a pair of TRW drop links on Mrs Crasher's Polo GTI last week, stopped half the rattle when I am in the car with her, the other is incurable...
