Check your springs carefully - all of them - from top to bottom as sometimes the small coils top or bottom rust through, break off and small pieces end up in the strut cup (front) or wishbone recess (rear) but the springs extend and jam back onto the mounts making them look normal. Also check your steering by rocking it back and forth with the steering lock disengaged to see if there is excess noise / knocking. Might not be the steering rack itself although wear is common but the inner tie rod ball joints. Also with the car on the ground reach behind the wheels and grasp the driveshafts shaking them in all directions to see if any play, there should be virtually none as worn inner cv / tripod joints common especially the OS one which extends from the gearbox on the left hand side of the car to the right hand wheel so noise would appear to be on the NS.


PS Don't go cheap with the drop links - the TRW ones for example are reasonably chunky but budget ones so much thinner.
Well, it's not droplinks then! Or springs. Unfortunately only had a jack, so couldn't try the steering or Driveshafts. Will have to try and get it on a lift. Was worth a try. They were TRW ones BTW.
