have always had the Audi serviced locally, but going to change the oil and filters myself. Wheres best to jack the A4 cab from? (I'm assuming it needs to be level for all the oil to drain out?)

You can jack from either side of the car. There should be indents on the sill for jacking points. Get yourself a jack pad. It saves crushing the sill, and combined with a 2 tonne trolley jack is a doddle. Obviously, whack in an axle stand for good measure, and chock rear wheels. There's an engine undertray to come off first. I can't remember if the sump plug has an integral washer, but get a copper one as a precaution.

The washer is part of the new sump plug. When I do my oil changes I am lucky in a way as my driveway has a slight slope so I drive up onto breeze blocks (with varying heights of wood first) and this lets me gain good access to the under tray and sump plug and also still gives me access from above to remove the coolant tank to one side and remove the filter. The car is almost spot on level. I do remove the under tray first and then take the car for a good run to get the oil good and hot and super runny before draining. Do this every 6 months.

This is what I use. The pinch seam on Audi and Skoda is quite deep, so a deep slot works well. Vehicle Pinch seam Weld Deep Trolley Jack Tool Rubber pad block Classic jack pad | eBayyg

The jack pad is reinforced, make in Slovakia., etc.

Just be careful, sump is Aluminium so don't over-torque the sump plug - 30NM according to Elsawin - I did once and was then not able to take the plug out so had to use a pump until the sump cracked and had to get a new one.

I did this last week, I simply drove two wheels (passenger side) onto a kerb so that the car was tilted towards the sump plug to ensure all oil came out. Put car in gear and handbrake on ahrd before getting under and make sure wheels fully on footpath. As mentioned above go for drive first to warm oil and remove coolant tank (1 screw and a cable) to get good access to filter from above.

I'd be careful with using breeze blocks (that are the ones with holes, yes?) in case they break - bricks are actually not very strong in some directions.

Another vote for just sucking it out the the dipstick hole, turn the job into a 10 minute simple task, especially on the 1.9tdi I had as the filter comes out the top as well. Quick, simple, no jacking and no mess (or even risk of it). That said, don't know which engine you have so the filter may be a little more tricky to get at from the top than mine was. I used to run mine on long life servicing but do an intermediate oil/filter change myself at 10k miles to avoid the camshaft lobe issue, which given I sold it with 240k miles with no symptoms seems to have paid off!
