I have a leaky shock on the front, and after doing some research, I am overwhelmed with the amount of options for replacement. I would prefer to not spend too much, but would like to know if anyone has had success with certain brands that have proven to match or closely match factory quality.

I am planning to replace both front shocks as that was advised.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

There are only two logical versions it could have, 3C0 413 031 AT or AS and the AT has gone to 3AA 413 031 M but in VW's own ECO range both are JZW 413 031 A BUT must be fitted in pairs, they cost £144.58 inc VAT retail for a pair from VW dealers or TPS compared to £206 from Euro Car Parts for a pair of Sachs Shock Absorber | Euro Car Parts so it is clear which is best value.

Auto Doc will do you a pair of shocks only for between £76 and £112. Kits containing new dust bellows and bump stops around £15. Several good brands and OE part numbers listed to match. Look out for 'for standard', 'for sports' or 'for off road' (heavy duty) remarks. I bought Sachs pair from them for little over £90 when max discount of 25% was available but the discount rotates every day to a different level. Buy when at least 22% active for better prices.
