    Dear Forum,
I live in France and have a friend who has a problem with his VW Touran 2005. Its done 200,000 km and has developed a noise from the right hand side front wheel when going round corners. On hard lock it makes a clunking sound. He thinks it must be the CV joint. Any ideas how much replacement CV joints cost and is it an easy job? Is it likely to be something else and not CV joints?
    Thanks
    Grahamchet

Hi Grahamchet, Ive had CV failures on other PQ35 chassis cars (Seat Altea XL) and my Touran. I've found the easiest way to repair a failed CV is actually to buy a complete driveshaft and fit myself. In the UK I'd buy from J&R on eBay myself, these are normally refurbished units but complete strip down refurbished and are basically as new. Very good value compared to new from VW!!! There are some alternatives that are a bit pricier here in the UK but I'd not know about parts shops in France unfortunately.
I believe you can buy seperate replacement CV's but less easy and messier for a DIY mechanic, than to swap the driveshaft out in my opinion.

Only really specialist tool you'll need is a 'triplesquare' 12 spline drive tool for the inner CV to gearbox connection and possibly a multipoint socket for the driveshaft to hub bearing centre bolt if yours isnt a traditional hex (you can see with the centre-cap or wheel off easily). Cant remember the exact sizes unfortunately.

The costs depends on the version of shaft, especially the right one, there are dozens of variations. Private Message me the VIN.

I've not long had one of mine done and it cost under £100 with a cheap garage. But you will need the tracking doing afterwards.
