    Hi Guys,

Has anyone used Watford Audi recently and, if so, can you give an opinion on whether their mechanics / technicians are well experienced on older Audi cars? I'm thinking of taking my car to them to diagnose a problem that has been bugging me since the last of last year and is getting worse.

I drive a 2003 A6 2.0 (ALT) with multi-tronic that is almost on 300k. It's had a lot of work over the years and still drives really well.

With the help of my long time / trusted mechanic we've been trying to find the source of metallic clank (only sounded like a short grinding noise from inside the car initially) coming from the drivers side. It started just after having all the small suspension arms (not the wheel bearing housing etc) and shocks changed for the MOT at the start of last year. I initially thought that some of those hadn't been tightened properly but he checked and they were fine.

Initially it only happened when changing direction, but started to do it when pulling away or accelerating after coasting for a while. So we thought that it could be the CV joints on that driveshaft. But that whole unit was replaced (re-engineered as Audi don't make new anymore) the summer before.

So I left it for a while and tried again later last summer when it had become a bit worse. New discs, wheel nuts, the carrier those bolt into and gearbox mounts. But still no joy. So again I decided to leave it for a bit until it got worse.

We are now at that point. I assumed that it was cheap CV joints used on the re-engineered driveshaft, so asked my mechanic to take it off and check them. There is no play. Lifting the car off the ground so the wheels hang down he noticed that if he rotates the wheel forward and backwards (in a rocking motion) that there's a loud clunking noise coming from the gearbox (multi-tronic) - which is still under warranty after being rebuilt by an automatic gearbox specialist (who seems to know a lot about multi-tronic boxes) in June 2017 (2 years / 24 miles - only 20k since). So I took the car to them on Saturday and left it there. Apparently they've had the gearbox out, opened up and checked the diff and chain and found no problem. They spoke to a local independent Audi specialist and apparently if the wheel bearing housing has any play in it, which apparently it does, it can cause strange pressure related issues that have knock on effects on the gearbox.

So, given that new wheel bearing housing are expensive, does any of that last bit sound remotely plausible? Which, if it does, brings me back to Watford Audi. If I get them to to do diagnosis do we think that they have the experience on the older cars to nail it before taking the plunge and getting the work done?

Sorry about War & Peace, but I don't want to spend a grand and then find out it's something else!

    Thanks in advance.

It actually turns out that the ball join on the lower suspension arm, that was replaced at the start of last year, had failed! And there was some play in the insert / collar that goes round it. So, back to being silky smooth to drive.
