Am after a smaller car for driving locally in city. Which engine and spec should i be looking at thats reliable and isn't plagued with costly repairs and recalls ?
Budget is around £3000-£3500. Don't mind high mileage thats been looked after. Maybe 1.4L/1.6L ? Diesel/petrol with half decent spec.

    ???

For that figure you may be looking at a mk 5 unless its a mk 6 with high mileage. There seems to be less faults with manuals from what Ive read. But for low mileage use I would go for petrol.

Theres plenty of MK6 going round on Autotrader with 110-120,000 miles for £3500. Just dont know which engine/spec are good or anything to avoid.

2.0 tdi is best by far.
    Avoid 1.6 tdi.
For city only and low miles 1.4 tsi, but it has its problems too.
    Current cars:
    2007 Passat b6 2.0 tdi BMR DSG
    2013 Golf MK7 1.6 tdi 5 speed

Just be aware that a lot of low emmission zones are planned to come in citys and towns over the next few years, so I would not be buying anything diesel unless it's Euro 6 emmission standards (generally 15 plate or newer).
Petrol engines meeting Euro 4 appear to be all right (about 05 plate on).
That's if all the proposed LEZ's follow the London model.

    Thanks for that link Crasher.
Some time ago, I attended a lecture given by Iveco trucks about future emmission control plans.
It appears that all the big citys have these plans in place, and a lot of smaller towns as well.
Even Machynlleth in North Wales has apparently applied to become a low emmission zone (one main street, only a large village really).
I intend to keep my old Euro 4 diesel going for a few more years (until they tax us off the roads, or it finally gives up), then my next car will be a petrol, or maybe even a hybrid (unless the doctors have stopped me driving before that).
