    Hello Everyone,

Would welcome your input here everyone.

I have 'on hold' an Audi A6 avant 2.4 petrol, automatic, Quattro 2052 plate. 77k miles, 12 months MOT and FSH. Last documented cam belt change was 2011 @ 41k miles. The MOT history looks good and suggests the car has been looked after.

Fuel costs aren't an issue and I am aware of the cost of a cam belt service and the price has been negotiated to reflect this. However, I have just been told that the car has a 'coolant leak somewhere on the engine' and won't be looked at till Monday. My gut says walk away at this point, better to disappoint the trader whom I've said save it for me, than buy a 'pig in a poke', if you pardon the expression. I know the coolant leak could be anything, including a frayed hose but having spoken to an independent, it could also be a valve in the centre of the V on the engine and cost £100's to rectify.

The car is at the opposite end of the country to me and therefore not easy to just go and have a look at. I also can't help that think, there is also the temptation to just throw in some rad-weld and say it is fixed without really looking into the problem on a car that is going to be 'sold as seen' anyway. Not everyone is honest these days and apologies to everyone out there who is. I don't mean to generalise.

From my point of view I do a lot of miles (225miles each way Monday to Friday for work) and although like to be comfortable, don't want to be shelling out for the rest of my life. I need a car for work as the last one has just dies and although at £2k I am not expecting a 'new' car I would like to know I am buying something that is up to the task in hand.

Any comments welcome and registration can be provided if this helps to add detail.

    Regards,

    Lee159

A 500-mile daily commute? Wow. Just from what you've described, my instinct would be to walk away. A minor leak of coolant could, as you say, be almost anything - up to and including some very expensive stuff...head gasket, for instance
