    Hi all,

Seeking some information that I havent been able to confirm. So a few years ago I bought a 1989 Audi 80 Quattro, this is a B3 1.8 K-Jetronic engine the same as what is found in the early Golf GTI's

Now this is an excellent car that is completely original (although the paint has seen better days) and a pleasure to drive however it has been the plan for the last few years to perform an engine transplant, my reasoning for this is, I had planned to modify the cars engine but due to its low milage and KJet unit i decided not to wade into ruining an old engine, or dealing with the headache that is modifying and tuning a KJet unit with no knowledge equipment or support, I am based in NZ and had to search for the better part of a year to find someone knowledgable enough, about these to tune one the first time around. Therefore decided an engine transplant would be the easiest route to go down as then I can mothball the original engine and fuel system and put it to one side for safe keeping if I ever decide to take the car back to original.

So then the hunt began for information on later model golf engines. as thats where my cars current engine originated from. and my biggest question is would the later model engines say out of an Mk3 or 4 GTI match the bellhousing stud pattern. I am aware that changing out the old engine for a new one will not be as simple as it sounds due to wiring and getting a dash cluster to work. but those issues are fairly secondary to knowing if I can keep the same gearbox with say an ABF or AGU unit? Im asking as I do not want to lose the 4 wheel drive. or am I going to have to worry about adapter plates to make such a transplant work? Any info would be appreciated as I have heard from one person saying anything up to an MK4 Golf GTI engine will work but simply dont know how to confirm this and want to avoid buying a donor engine i cant use.

Or has anything like this been done or attempted by someone before?

    Cheers

The simple answer in the UK would be to transplant the A4 1.8T quattro (small q please) engine, box and management system, if you can find one that has not been destroyed by sludge oil starvation. Converting the Golf engine from transverse to inline operation is going to require lots of A4 bits anyway, you can pick up a decent 8D for around £500 in Blighty and the 1.8T can make daft power levels. I am just building a 2.5 10v type 85 quattro to go to NZ.
