I have had an ongoing problem with my car going into limp home mode, or at least I thought it was that, however the car does not drive at 30 or 40 mph when this happens but loses power completely, I can crawl at about 5 mph and no responce at the accelorator peddle at all, nothing; oddly, it seems to be able to reverse ok.

I have had this problem before and found, and so thought, it was rain water in the ECU, I dried all this out, resealed as best I could and the problem seemed to be cured; but it comes back. Can run fine for days or weeks and then it will happen, NORMALLY following a wet period.

I do think that turbo needs cleaning and there is oil in the EGR.

No relavant codes with vagcom except:

    18047 - Accelerator position sensor 1/2 (g79/G185)
    P1639 - 35-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent.

I've spent many months trying to work this out, never seen anything that says the car will crawl at 5mph, most seem to say it's damp in the ECU, but this has now happened when it's dry as a bone in there, I have recently read it could be a fuel filtre problem.

On a related matter, can the ECU be relocated from it's current position into the cabin area? seems like an obvisous answer but I was just wondering why they put it in such a silly place.

    From Ross-Tech :-

    18047/P1639/005689

    Contents

    18047/P1639/005689 - Accelerator Position Sensor 1/2 (G79/G185): Implausible Signal

    Possible Symptoms

    • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
    • Reduced Engine Output

    Possible Causes

    • Wiring and/or connections faulty
    • Faulty ECM
    • Faulty Accelerator Pedal

    Possible Solutions

    • Check Measuring Block Readings for Accelerator Pedal
    • Check Voltage Signals from ECM to Throttle Pedal (see factory repair manual)
    • Check Wiring and Connectors from ECM to Accelerator Pedal

    Special Notes

    • There are 2 sensors in the accelerator pedal, both should increase in the same direction as the accelerator is pressed but they have different scales. This means one counts from 0 to 100, while the other one counts from 0 to 50.

    • Accelerator Position Sensor faults can be caused by issues with the Oxygen Sensor(s) and it's wiring. Please verify this BEFORE replacing the ECM or Accelerator Pedal. Accelerator Pedal failure is very rare.

Looks like you will have to check both halfs of the throttle position sensor circuits with vagcom first.
