Hi folks, my oil filter housing is leaking at the block so I am going to replace it.

It looks pretty tight in there and there are very few decent videos how to on you tube.

Any tips on getting it out, I'm hoping I can work mainly from above and removing the anti shudder valve plus other hoses gain enough room!

Any thoughts appreciated or replacement guides!

Just as a follow up to this...............

I managed to do this job completely from above as I was limited by lack of ramp, I don't think it would have been much easier attacking it from below but may have helped a little.

The biggest part of this job is removing several (maybe 6-8) coolant hose connections to create space to do the work, this was made easier by using a good spring clip removal tool on a cable for awkward access.

I used a siphon to remove about 1 litre of oil (I found that I got very little leaking when I removed the housing) via the dipstick, then used the siphon to drain the filter housing of oil by removing the oil filter first. I drained all the coolant.

I sourced a Metzger oil filter housing from GSF car parts for £83 inc vat, it appears to be a VW part or at least of reasonable quality. I was also quite surprised that it came with a new oil cooler, oil filter and all seals & gaskets, there are some very cheap ones on ebay for £40 which I wouldn't rate and TPS wanted over £200 for one, VW was £300.

There seems to be a bit of a manufacturing defect with these housings because the galley / waterway for the collant seems to break where it meets the block and a fair few people in varying VWs complain of this with the usual symptom being coolant loss.

Anyway I've done 500 miles and so far all looks good. I'll try and post some pics.

I was going to say remember the bracket to block bolts are one time only, tighten following the correct diagonal sequence in two stages to 14Nm + 180 degrees and whilst in there, change the crank sensor so you don't have to take it apart again later...
