I've had my A4 1.8T off the road for a few weeks whilst I did some jobs on it. One of the jobs was water pump and timing belt. I started the car for the first time in four weeks today and found that the top end is now noisy (it wasn't noisy before the lay-up). I let the engine idle for about 15 minutes and it came up to temperature (90C), although I noticed that the oil temperature didn't rise above 60C. The noise stayed the same throughout this period.

The noise sounds similar to what the hydraulic tappets of my Mk1 MX-5 make if I don't use it for a few weeks, but they go quiet after a few seconds.

If the noise is caused by the oil draining out of the tappets, would you expect 15 minutes of iding to refill them? What oil temperature would you typically expect?

    Thanks.

Did you double check the timing marks as I suggested 2 weeks ago?

Yes, I did, and I also tried it with the crank sprocket turned through one tooth clockwise and one tooth anti-clockwise of where it originally was, and the timing marks were way out under these two conditions. So, despite the fact that with the current situation the the mark on the crank pulley is 2mm to the left of the mark on the lower timing cover (the cam sprocket is lined up and a long screwdriver in no. 1 cylinder shows TDC), it is better than the 12-15mm offset which is what was present when I did the two tests above.

These engines in longitudinal installations are extremely prone to blocked oil pick ups due to sump sludge, many a 1.8T has died because of this, my Octavia did it at four years old.

How often did you change the oil, please?

I'm changing my oil (Shell Helix 5W-40, synthetic) every 8,000 km (5,000 miles). The last change was at 52,000 km (32,500 miles) at which time it had had 8 oil changes from new.

I'm hoping there is no sludge buildup, but will have a look into the sump and at the pickup strainer with my endoscope next time I drain it.

I bought it blown and rebuilt it. It had done 121K miles and had five service stamps, the chap bought it and I think the seller reset the indicator without doing anything. He booked it into me for a service but it seized before the date. I have seen so many 1.8T's damaged this way I have lost count but the worst offenders are the longitudinal versions, I think the shape of the sump has something to do with it. This was my favorite, a 3B Passat, someone had cleaned the sump out but used what smelt like windscreen sealant, lots of it!

The sludge problem hasn't happened to me in the 4 years owning 1.8t's. I've had several engines in my a3 over the years (blown turbos, bent rods etc) and never had that problem yet. We will see when I strip my s3's Frankenstein of an engine down eh lol

As I said it is not anywhere near so much of a problem on transverse engines as it is on longitudinal ones, I think something to do with the shape of the back of the sump.
