A few times I have forgotten to press the brake pedal when the car is Park, turned the key and the engine has started.
Can someone please advise if this can damage anything and whether there should be something to prevent the engine from starting if the brake pedal isn't applied.

Personally I don’t understand why an automatic locked in park has to have the brake pedal depressed to start but that aside I would say brake light switch fault.

That's just VW over safety policy.

An auto will only start if in park or neutral, I don't know why the brake pedal has to be pressed. As Crasher says the brake light switch could be faulty.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

If you think about it, pressing the brake pedal to start actually compromises safety as in doing so you release the lever lock, the other one which drives me mad is pressing the clutch pedal, start a car in gear with the clutch up and it lurches and you release the key, start a car in gear with the clutch down and then release it, you unleash the torque of an idling engine, not just a cranking starter.

I used to have a 2010 diesel Passat and that wouldn't start unless the clutch pedal was depressed. I thought this was to protect the DMF? Another safety feature on the Passat was that the auto handbrake wouldn't release unless your seat belt was worn, which is ok but annoying if you just want to move the car a few metres on your own driveway.

That stupid feature annoys me when your working on the engine. It should be in neutral before you try to start the engine. You have to get inside and push the clutch pedal down before you can start the engine.

Especially irritating on my Tecalamit Mk5 two post lift as you can’t open the door enough to get in, the other three Tecalamits are fine.
