The 2.0 tdi in the A6 Avant sometimes idles where it always has at 8-850 rpm but then sometimes is about 1000rpm. It can rise at any time it has slowed down. sometimes it is fine all day sometimes it is wrong all day.
Occasionally it can alter during a trip.
If it is idling too fast and I turn off the engine and restart it generally settles back to 800 ish but then may have increased after a drive and slowing down...or maybe not!
    no fault lights/codes.

    There are two possibilities:
    Its doing DPF regen.
Or its using auxiliary electric heater to heat interior (And by doing that helps heat up coolant quicker) and by doing that it draws a lot from alternator and therefore rises idle.
It uses heater when outside temp is below 8 degrees C I think, but this threshold, probably, can be altered with VCDS.
    Current cars:
    2007 Passat b6 2.0 tdi BMR DSG
    2013 Golf MK7 1.6 tdi 5 speed

Hi and thanks, ok..2006 car dont think it has DPF?
As for the auxillary elctric heater.....its not thins over 4 years ownership and can dop it on lovely warm days like last week. Not sure thats the answer...its faster than normal.

I mixed it up with C7.
Probably it has DPF and thats the reason for higher RPM.

Update on this...we now get at various times the ESP light come on as a fault, as well as the hit and miss idle speed. A scan has come up with ABS-18265-032 load signal error message from ECU P18-57
looking up this has no particular diagnosis BUT does seem to often relate back to MAF sensor issues giving strange readings the computer does not beleive.
    Anyone had this?
also....is there experience of aftermarket MAF used..any good??
