My OHs 2004 1.6 BGU is continually giving MAP problems, one wire (yellow) seems to breaking down in the cable to the MAP sensor. It was repaired by the dealer many years ago and I have since soldered it twice, the repair lasting anything from a year to a couple of weeks.

I've now ordered a new wired plug, but my question is should I solder or crimp, I assume heat in the engine bay causes the wire/solder repair to break down? How much voltage/current do the wires carry?

    Thanks for any help/guidance.

    I'd go crimp.

I've something in the back of my mind about soldering not being good in these sort of conditions. Something to do with creating a stress point where the solder "ends" and the wire itself flexes and breaks. Crimping has the electrical connection held at one point and a mechanical "support" at another, a bit further away. Happy to be enlightened if I've got muddled somewhere along the line.

    Andy.

    Thanks Andy.

I have soldered twice in each case I've ended up with a dry joint pretty quickly. I'm guessing its the heat.

Crimp it is then and I'll probably wrap it in heat proof tape.

If at all possible I avoid soldering or even joining wires, preferring to replace them from crimp to crimp but this is not always possible or practical so good soldering techniques with quality products and a powerful iron, important. It is also important to make sure the join is water tight (heat shrink is best) and MOST important of all, the join immobilised so it cannot move, for example strapping both sides to another run of wires that don’t move. In the aerospace industry soldering is nearly banned, only being used in certain situations where a mechanical connection is impractical.

Thanks again, do you know what sort of current do MAP wires carry?

Its always Pin 4 yellow wire that breaks down.

They only carry fractions of an amp, so current capacity of the wire isn't the problem.
It will always be down to the quality of the repair.

Even crimped joints need to be done with the correct tool & not just pliers.
