The car is performing well, 167k miles though. Drive somewhere, park for 2 hours, drive off later and it stalls after 50 meters or so. Sitting in the middle of the road and it spins over fine but it'll not even splutter.

Rest it for a minute and try again, after a few seconds it coughs then starts, back to it's old self!

Feels like fuel starvation so my thoughts turn to the fuel filter, I'll organise a new one, my records show it replaced 40k miles ago so why not.

    Any thoughts?

Getting the fuel filter changed is a no brainer.

There are two electric fuel pumps on this engine so one could be starting to fail.

But it's no good & can be expensive trying to second guess these engines.
So a VCDS scan is the next call after the filter has been changed.

My gut feeling is that some non mechanical component is unwell hence it functions fine after utterly failing, after much digging found a similar tale of woe ending up with this conclusion. Engine code read is the next stop indeed.

    Engine Speed sender cable

I found a VW technician that was now working for himself. I explained everything that I had gone through and let him free on the car. Within an hour he had found and repaired the broken wire leading from the Engine Speed Sender to the ECU!
