Traction control dash light comes on after brakes depressed even sitting stationery. I have fitted a new battery and driven it for several miles but still comes on and stays lit after each start up but only after pressing brake pedal and not sitting idling.

Ran cheap code reader but no error codes showing up.

Read it could be MAF sensor or brake switch but not sure what to believe.

    Any advice would be appreciated

If changing brake light switch be careful, I changed mine to try and cure an issue and 3 switches later brake lights stayed on all the time. Ended up taking to dealer to change and all fine since.

I'm quite savvy when replacing parts on cars but the blasted brake pedal switch had me stumped

this is the way to change the switch follow this and you should be fine first time

Removing and installing brake light switch
    Note
t The brake light switch must be removed in order to adjust it.
t To ensure a secure fit, the switch may only be fitted once.
    Removing
    Unplug electrical connector.
Turn brake light switch anti-clockwise 45° to remove.
    Installing
Installation is performed in reverse sequence; note the following:
Pull out plunger of brake light switch as far as it will go -arrow-.
Fit retainer tabs -1- and -2- on switch into recesses in mounting hole.
    Remove driver's storage compartment: → Rep. Gr.68
    Note
t When installing, brake pedal must not be pressed.
t The plunger adjusts itself automatically when the brake light switch is inserted.
Guide switch through mounting hole, press against pedal and secure by turning 45° clockwise.
After adjusting the brake light switch check whether the brake pedal is on the end stop (rest position).

    Hi,

Perhaps you’ve sorted this now but I can the same issue with my 2005,1.8T cabriolet. The cause of the problem was the brake light switch failing. As detailed in the other replies. Fairly easy fix, part available at Euro Parts, cost £13.00. Took me about half hour to sort.

I also had the symptom of the ABS light coming on aswell as the ESP light. Common fault as I understand it.

    Regards,

    Steve

The key point is to not press the pedal down as you would have upto the Golf 4, after the Golf 4 had been around a while they were going through a lot of brake light switches and it took a while for the pedal not pressed point to become known.
