For some reason the diagram I am looking at says the BUS is in the centre consul but on the ones I have done it is up under the dash. Check fuse 2 in the dash side fuse panel and fuse 12 in the engine bay fuse box, check they have power, not just the condition fuse itself.

Thank you Crasher. Massively appreciated. I'm aiming to get back there over the next couple of days with my multimeter. I forgot it last time as we just thought it was going to be a case of plugging VCDS in, reading, wiping and taking it from there.

the outcome of this is as follows:
we tried starting the car with airbox disconnected - exactly the same symptoms as above - ran for 1 second, but worse than with it connected - so MAF is okay.
removed and tested all fuses, as well as checking power to all slots on both fuse boards.
checked for any obvious visual issues - none.
found canbus module behind steering wheel next to load of relays - all looks dry, secure and undamaged.

couldn't access EGR valve due to lack of space and tools.

from what i have found online, the new EGR is likely to be bad as this has the symptoms as a bad immobiliser. starts, runs for 1 second then cuts fuel.

we could not get my VCDS (genuine) or Autel to communicate with any controller on the car, although there is power going from obdii port to power device.

friend is going to sell for scrap. if we had been able to communicate with the car, we'd have had a better chance.

Unfortunately not. Car wouldn’t communicate with vcds or any other device. Mate sold it as a non runner in the end.

If you think the EGR is stuck open preventing the engine from continued running, blank it off.

If it then starts you will have your answer, although will run in limp mode.

You can always get one of these to keep it going :-
