Looking for a little advice on a relatives A3 2.0tdi 2004 (BKD engine). It has done 145k on the original clutch but now on maybe 1 in 30 shifts the pedal can be a bit sticky on returning. It was suggested that a fluid change/bleed could be the issue but they took it to a national chain of repairers who said it was most likely the CSC which was a common issue on VAG cars. They didn't get that done as the quote was nearly 800 which sent them into a bit of a tailspin.

Would welcome some advice on whether it may be worth trying a fluid change first or whether given the mileage they may as well just get a new clutch. If that, I'm assuming it would be sensible to get the DMF done at the same time?

The problem is, most garages (not us) don’t change the clutch system fluid at the bi-annual brake fluid change so the concentric release bearing fails. Yes it would be daft not to change the DMF with their propensity for failure, a proper LUK or Sachs clutch/DMF/bearing kit would cost around £1k fitted by a reputable garage who also change all the mounting bolts as they should do.
