My warning bleeper that warns me if I've left the lights on when I get out of the car isn't working and I've already left the lights on a couple of times.

I've no idea where to start looking to resolve this problem.

Sounds like your car isn't registering that a door has been opened, do you see on the display that doors are open? central locking work on every door? Also a scan might help with the diagnosis.

The door open warning does show on the display. There has been a problem with the central locking (before I got the car) and the tailgate has to be opened with a key. However, the BLEEP has worked since I've had the car so something else must have gone wrong?

I am debating getting a CPU scanner as there are always problems with old cars but I'm not sure if they are worth my money or which one to get (different units seem to have different features).

My local garage charges £10 to scan the CPU - EDIT: plug the fault reader in.

The buzzer is in the dash and is known to fail.
You can remove the dashpod and solder in a new buzzer

Check if the car is realising the door is open. Does the interior light come on as it should when you open the door? If you have a DIS, does it show the door open symbol?

You can use VCDS / Vagcom to tell you if the car know the door is open.
