Yes it can be difficult, have you done the ABS trigger test?

Unfortunately i have not managed to get a good enough feel on the pedal to be confident enough to do the ABS trigger test.

Can only assume I'm doing something wrong!

You won't get one WITHOUT doing the ABS trigger test, it is this test that shifts the air. Is it a Bosch or ATE ABS unit?

It is normally only the Bosch units that require the ABS tigger to bring the pedal up but elsa does state to does this on a T5 with the Mk25 pump. The other trick I use is to use the pump to help me bleed, with the pressure bleeder primed and an assistant on the appropriate nipple I run the pump in output tests, shout "open" and pump the pedal 10 times then hold the pedal down and shout "close". When I have done this to all four corners, I then go further in the output tests where you can simulate both ABS and ESP functions and with said assistant on the appropriate wheel checking it does what it says on the screen, then........ give all four corners a conventional bleed again. On some early Golf 4's with the Mk20 we could spend hours trying to get a decent pedal and had one instance where a car had been fitted with two genuine and two aftermarket master cylinders and we had to fit another genuine one to get the pedal back but we know the techniques now and they ain't in the book! One point though, it is important to have the battery under charge whilst does this.
