    Hi,

I have recently replaced my ATE Abs pump and controller on my 2004 2.5tdi AXE T5 transporter and I'm looking for some advice on bleeding the brakes ?

Are there any specific procedures that need to followed and is VCDS input required ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A diagnostic system capable of Basic Settings is imperative and a pressurised brake bleeding system is almost as important, without both and knowing what to do, you will not get the air out.

It depends on if it is a Mk20, 25 or 60 system.

    It’s a MK25 system.

Off the top of my head, like the Mk20, you have to go through the full 17 step on screen process because if you don’t the ABS stores a permanent no basic settings code and leaves the light on, the Mk60 doesn't do this. When it says to hold the pedal down, be ready for the kick back which can actually lift you out of the seat, if the pedal kicks back unresited it can do damage. You will know if it is like this if after clicking go it changes from 1 to 2 and so on rather than just staying at 1.

I’ve done this today using VCDS and it only allows me to go through the first step.
Brakes have improved but still feel they could be better, am I doing something wrong ?

Oddly the ELSA manual does not specify the basic settings bleed so I think it is just the one step and I do this around four times, this is the official procedure for a soggy pedal

    Subsequent bleeding of hydraulic system

    Carry out subsequent bleeding when:

brake pedal travel is too long or so-called »soft brake pedal«

This requires the assistance of a second mechanic:

Depress brake pedal firmly and hold.

Open bleeder valve on rear right brake caliper.

    Fully depress brake pedal.

Close bleed valve with pedal held down.

    Release brake pedal slowly.

This bleed sequence must be carried out 5 times per brake caliper.

    Bleeding sequence:

    1. Front right brake caliper

    2. Front left brake caliper

    3. Rear right brake caliper

    4. Rear left brake caliper

A road test must be carried out after the brakes have been bled. When doing this an ABS regulation must be performed at least once!

The triggering of the ABS is the important thing, you will be amazed at how effective it is BUT take care etc.
