Hi there, as per heading, I have over the last two weeks a clunking sound from the front of my cabriolet. It does it when you go over a sleeping policeman, but not when you go onto it, it's when you come off the other side.

it passed the MOT in December, and had two front lower arms fitted, these were the Mayle heavy duty ones, it was fine after these were fitted, they were replaced because of the dust caps were perished, not because the joints were loose.

i have checked nothing has come loose, and all looks ok, I was perhaps thinking the ARB bushes where it bolts to the subframe along the front or maybe the top strut mounts.

is there an easy way to check the top strut mounts?

    Thanks for reading........

There are six other arms that are prone to failure and the 8E/8H front top mounts are virtually immune to wear as they don't swivel on this design.

Now all sorted, it was the anti roll bar rattling on the drivers side lower drop link bolt, the garage that fitted the new front arms had cross threaded the arb and the bolt was not pinching the drop link against the arb, hence it was rattling around on the bolt. Took it all out and tapped the ARB with a 10mm tap I just happen to have in my tool box from my aircraft fitting days, used a tapping block so it tapped in dead square and with the use of some tapping fluid re cut the thread. Bolt back in and all torqued up and no rattles after the test drive. If only garages took a little more care, I suppose my aircraft engineering means I am really fastidious with my work.

Aircraft engineering is a different, highly controlled regime where costs are not allowed to compromise safety. People ring around garages searching for the cheapest quote done ASAP as they have to collect the future snow flakes
from school, in the aerospace industry that sort of mindset an environment is not allowed.

Yes you are correct, there are no lay-bys in the sky! That's why a crush seal costs nearly £100 and a special washer is £87....all have to have c of c from supplier to trace material back to its beginnings. Aircraft components are very expensive......

I went on a factory family open day at Airbus in north wales and while wandering around I picked up an elaborate looking lump of metal. The employee stood nearby said I should be careful and my brother in law added that the piece in questions was titanium and cost £100,000. It's amazing that bits for cars can be so cheap really.

And yet people scream like stuck pigs when anti roll bar drop link costs £20 but below like a shot bear if the airliner they get onto to go to Torremolinos is grounded due a £10k parts problem..
