May be getting back into the world of Audis. A 1988 80 1.8 petrol was my first car and I almost bought a 2.8 V6 A4 just before I bought my first Subaru, which I've had for 10 years now.

I now have the option on an A6 Avant with the same engine which also has an LPG conversion. Couple of concerns when I viewed - exhaust seems a bit steamy, even when warm. It isn't in regular use atm so I did wonder if that was a possible cause. Anything else they are prone to? Head gasket failure?

It also has an airbag light on, which I think my usual mechanic should have the software to sort, but what would cause that to illuminate in the first place?

Final question - do these engines need lubricant when LPG converted? Wondering if the white smoke was potentially indicative of valve seat recession.

Keen for some local knowledge on the above

The valve guides will suffer and most cars with LPG conversions tend to be very badly cared for, if the owner is so parsimonious about fuel, look at the tyres, are they Chinky rubbish? If so the rest of the car has probably been cared for in the same tight manner and will be a liability. Also I have NEVER in 40 years of being a grease monkey ever seen a good LPG conversion as again the whole point is much cheapness and so they get lashed in. I had a rare petrol T5 in with one last year and the gas tank filler pipe was sitting on a traling arm and going up and down with the suspension, a rigid copper pipe no less.....

I ran an A4 1.8T from 100k to 210k miles on LPG. In the end the LPG ECU packed up (it was mounted on the bulkhead beneath the header tank and suffered from water ingress), but the engine was running fine when I disposed of it at 225k miles. Didn't use any sort of valve lubricant.
