I had a Citroen before this Passat and a clever little trick that you could do on them is attach a small led to the heated mirror wiring. The reason being, when regenerating the car turns on the heated mirrors (for some reason!) so when you are driving along and see the led light up you know its regenerating and if you need to you can just keep driving until it goes off again.

Just wondering if there are any obvious tell tale signs in the passat so I know to carry on driving if its midway through

As far as I know the engine idle speed is a little higher than normal and the exhaust really stinks . My last two diesels have been like that.

That's right, rpm at idle up to 1000, exhaust gas temp goes right up, an odd smell and the cooling fans come on and stay on when you turn it off.

First time it happend on my previous Passat I thought I had problems and spent half an hour in a Scottish layby crapping myself!
