Hi. Apologies if this question has already been asked/answered, but I'm looking for a definitive answer.

Car in question is a 2015 VW Golf 1.4 TSI ACT GT (150), completely stock with zero modifications.

Not due just yet, but at some point I'll need to replace the rear brake pads. As this car is fitted with the electronic parking brake, it's the first time I've had to wrangle with winding back the caliper piston on this type of setup.

Can anyone say, is there a mechanical solution to wind back the caliper piston, or can this be done ONLY by using the plug-in computer?

    Thanks.

Plugin. There is a pre and post service position.

    Okay. Thanks for confirming.

Can anyone suggest what my cheapest option to buy a plug-in device is, to allow this (and possibly other) self-service tasks?

    Much obliged.

I’d say buying a tool to do this a only couple of times is a false economy. If you going to do a load, vcds isn’t exactly expensive.

Backing the motor off is in the ABS system on the Golf 7 but you push the pads back in the conventional manner, DO NOT wind them back!

If it's the same set-up as a Passat then you can just remove the motors from the back of the calipers, 2 torx screws.

Then wind the larger torx socket on the back of the caliper until it comes to a stop, lots of turns.

Push the piston back in with the bleed nipple cracked & fit your new pads.

Wind the torx on the caliper until the pads clamp the disc, then wind it back one turn to allow the disc to turn again freely.

When you fit the motors back onto the calipers, put some grease on the splines & torx socket.
The caliper socket is very poor quality steel & rusts away, eventually the spline rounds off & causes a failure.

You can get replacements for this off eBay, but does of course need the caliper rebuilt to replace it.

Carista (Amazon £16) can be used to disable the electronic parking brake to permit brake pad change. It can do a lot more too👍
