My heating on the car takes forever to get warm. Even before this cold weather it took about 15-20 mins to get slightly warm. Any ideas what it is and what can be changed to make it better?

    TIA

Blocked heater matrix, flush the system or change the matrix but flush the system before changing anything.

Blocked matrix’s on the Golf 5 are not a common problem, in fact I can’t remixer ever doing one BUT the important electric
supplementary heater heater is a common failure and a code read will show if this is faulty. If you can see it is slow to warm up visually on the gauge, replacing the thermostat would be a good idea.

Hi Crasher, where is the supplementary heater, I've the same car, a 2.0L BKD Golf V. I have no hot air, the matrix hoses in the engine bay both get hot, I'm going to check the matrix metal pipes inside the car tomorrow. The flap (blend door?) that the cold / hot knob controls can be seen to open and close at the matrix rad. This flap is either fully open or fully closed on my car, is this correct or should it be able to remain partially open if the temp knob is in the middle?

Is replacing the supplementary heater a dash out job? I can replace the heater matrix without removing the dash but I don't think the matrix is the problem now.

I've the basic heating / air/con system by the way, just the 3 knobs, no climate control or digital controls.

My temp gauge gets to 90 as normal and stays there and I'm not losing coolant or having to top up. My top hose gets very hot and my bottom hose just gets warmish and I believe this is normal for a Tdi bottom hose. I've replaced the thermostat with a genuine one about a year ago.

I'd appreciate you're thoughts / opinion on what my problem could be?

    Hi @golfgt140

Was it working ok before it sat unused for 6 months?

Which fan are you referring to? The radiator fans or the heater blower fan (behind dashboard / glovebox)?

Are you saying when you removed the fan you tested it / powered it up and it worked?

From memory air is sucked up from inside the cabin by the fan (via a pollen filter) then passes through the HVAC unit to the air distribution housing where it is then sent down the relevant vents by opening and closing flaps

that are actuated by the rotary dials above the gearstick.....would seem very strange to get a blockage down any of these that would prevent airflow....

Can you hear the fan working at all? If it works off the car but not inside it.....would suspect wiring....or perhaps simply a fuse?

Have you got access to VCDS?

Can you actually hear the blower motor when you turn on the setting 1 - 4? Is that the fan you're referring to or the rad fans as asked above. If the blower motor isn't working it could be no power going to it, fuses, etc,,, maybe a mouse made a nest when it was parked up or a rat ate the wiring. We need more info.

If you remove the little storage tray on the top centre of the dash above the radio you can see down to the flap that opens / closes directly in front of the matrix, you can visually see if the flap is working when operating the cold / hot knob. Also, if you remove some trim down at the side of the gears tick and look in there there is the little actuator that operates the flap and you can see if that's moving there too.

The air comes in through a mesh screen in the plenum chamber under the windscreen, into the fan and then the filter; the mesh screen can get blocked with debris and not allow any air in.
