Hi guys... hopefully someone can help!
I have a 2003 8L1 1.6 sport and have heavy steering issue as if the power steering is not working properly. I changed the fluid , bled the system and reset to no joy. I have now replaced the power steering pump, aux. belt then reset again but still no joy. It is working a bit but not as it should and will not centre when driving straight unless i turn the wheel as it's stiff. I have been told there could be a steering knuckle issue or possibly needing a new rack but was wondering if anyone has had similar issues and could assist before i spend more money on new parts (like the pump i didn't require) which don't fix it! It has only done 48k miles and in great condition apart from the steering problem but i don't want to keep blindingly flinging cash at it, as it is an older vehicle.
any info would be most welcome

    Hi there,

Work through it logically, disconnect the steering column from the steering rack. Mark the steering wheel with a piece of tape in the dead a head position (straight a head)
Turn first one revolution one way and back then one revolution the other way and back to central on the steering wheel, is it easy to turn? if easy to turn the problem then points to the rack it self.
Depending on where you are located there is no need to shell out on a new rack. I had my A6 rack reconditioned for £150 this included complete strip rebuild new seals etc and new rack gaiters and track rod ends
