    Good question.

    I think it’s PD with DPF, but not home just now. It’s a 2.0TDi 140 registered Feb2008.

Chassis plate shows 1.0 for emissions. I have been ‘told’ that a dent/scratch on the plate to obscure the number and take it to another centre might work. I don’t think that’s a good idea, as I’m sure the current ‘fail’ would record the value required....

Probably a PD - straight lined plastic engine cover = PD whereas diagonal lined plastic engine cover = CR.

Still, if my 170 blows 1.05 on its 1st pass at 212k, you might get it down there with the cheaper service items replaced and some fuel injector cleaner. With a DPF on mine I always check using VCDS that a regeneration has occurred just before it goes in otherwise you get a whole lot of crap coming out just when you don't want it to.

A good closed boost circuit reduces soot so if there are any boost pipe seals that are ever so slightly leaking it will increase opacity. Case on point a 2007 Focus with a split in the top boost pipe to the intake - loads of smoke. New hose put on and zero smoke.

My MoT is in March so in February it will be oil and filter service timed to precede the MoT, new fuel filter (a tenner so worth doing ever year), an intake clean (EGR, ASV valve and manifold do this every 50 to 60k anyway) and a month of fuel injector cleaner (a double redex diesel shot in each tank about £4 if on offer). Plus a regeneration run a couple of days before the test. Gets a mild ragging ('Italian Tune Up') in Sport mode once a week which keeps helps keep the VNT mechanism in the turbo free as its full rage is used.

" Plus a regeneration run a couple of days before the test."

Do you do a forced regen using VCDS or have you another way of pushing it into a regen. ( By disconnecting perhaps one of the exhaust rubber pressure hoses )

I've always had it in mind that one day my car will decide to regen just as I turn up at the MOT & probably fail the emissions.

I wonder if that might have happened with the OP.

All the cars i've had with a DPF have registered no smoke at all in the emissions.

I wonder if the OP's car still has the DPF in tact.

Usually book the MoT early as soon as it does one. I do around 200 miles a week now on slower roads instead of nearly 400 mixed, so happens more frequently, around once a fortnight. It's obvious when it does it as the rev range changes and it feels a little less peppy and has a small drink. No smoke anymore after I resealed the sump which I'd removed to swap in a KMB shaft, must have not torqued it properly the last time it was off (d'oh!). Bolts were finger tight and oil seeping out but that was a while back.

I just then check VCDS to see how long ago it occurred and book it in within a week.

    Thanks for the reply Mitch.

I had thought it must be possible to send the car into a regen by fiddling with a sensor to make the ECU think it needs one.

Thought I might just need to remove one of the rubber DPF pressure pipes to increase the differential pressure.

But not the weather to be fiddling & mine & wifes MOT not till December.

You can invoke a forced regeneration without having the car stationary - just need to enter the relevant override code into VCDS, make sure you have a least a quarter tank of diesel or more (better) then take it for a drive. As long as there are no active faults that might stop the regen, it should do it like it normally does (over 2000 revs, 15 to 20 minutes).
