    I've got 19" alloys (5x112 - 8.5J - ET43) with 255 35 R19 tyres on my Avant.

The ride is quite firm for my requirements and I'm looking to soften the ride somewhat by dropping down to 18" wheels and having slightly higher profile tyres.

I found numerous sets online and this particular size keeps cropping up. Can anyone tell me if I can install 18" alloys at 5x112 - 8J - ET47 with 245 40 R18 tyres without any problems?

Would this be a straight swap or do I need spacers and the like?

Any info would be much appreciated!

To find out what size tyre you need put your reg into black circles and it'll give you the options that the car with from factory. I would imagine for 18's your going to be looking at 235/40/18 8J ET40. My Allroad is 235/50/18 8.5J ET41.
There is a website I have been using the last few weeks called Will they fit, you put your current details in and also the details of the wheels you'd like, it does a like for like comparison and also how far out your speedo will be etc.
