Yep, that's exactly what I read in the Haynes manual, glad I haven't totally lost the plot! I'll double check the interior fuses but I still don't understand why the interior lights don't work when the doors are open, even if the battery was really dead wouldn't they still come on?

Interior lights come direct from the fuse box. Is it worth pulling this out and having a look at the terminals underneath?

I had read about the terminals under the battery tray, didn't think about checking under the fuse box. I replaced the fuse box myself about two years ago after the original badly designed VW one melted!

I started writing a long list of what to check from looking at the wiring diagram and it all became clear, all the dead systems get their power from the midi fuse at position 8 on the front of the engine bay fuse box, the one on the CARS far left next to the inner wing with a thick 6mm CSA red wire from it. Well at least that is what each individual wiring diagram says but when you look at the schematic of the fuse box, there is no fuse 8! The fuses are listed as a strip and there are two different versions listed for your car.

Yes a midi fuse type design but it looks like a full strip version on that model.

    Hi Both,

The original fuse box that I replaced did not have these strip fuses but the replacement I added does. I think that VW re-designed it when the first version melted! I have tested all the strip fuses and they are fine too. I will try and get a picture of the fuse box, probably tomorrow afternoon as I'm back a little earlier.

If I may be so bold (I feel emotionally invested in this car now ) could you please check the voltage at F12 with Ignition on to see if the T30 relay is juicing that rail. Ta
