Hi Everyone, Newbie here so please bear with me!

I've been battling with a problem with our Touran for around a month now, I should start with some background information.

Ok, so one evening I dropped the kids off at a group they belong to, no issues, I pulled up in the car park, they jumped out, I came home and waited to pick them up. A couple of hours later got a call to go get them, stepped outside, tried to unlock the car, indicators flashed, doors didn't unlock. Manually unlocked the drivers door, tried to start the car, it cranked but engine wouldn't start. I thought it was battery related as the car is second hand and I've no idea when the battery was last replaced if ever. Got a friend to pick up the kids and over the next week arranged to buy a new battery. Wife went with her Dad picked up battery came home fitted it and the car started, problem solved or so we thought! I came home home, tried to start the car, it started for about 10-15 seconds then the engine cut and the MFD said "Switch off ignition!". After that, interior lights were out, no central locking, horn didn't work, windows didn't work, and the car was back to cranking but not starting.

    Fast forward to now!

There has been much reading, researching and investigation and I don't want to chuck it all into here for fear of overloading everyone! I started typing everything that we've done but it might be better to start with a question and work from there!

So what I'm trying to work out is if I'm seeing a wiring or module fault. I'm erring on the side of module failure because so many systems have gone offline at once.

Can I start with asking if a damaged BCM could cause the car to crank but not start, seems to me that the immobiliser is working otherwise it wouldn't crank?

I appreciate this post isn't well structured and I apologise but any replies would be welcome. I can give more info about what we've done as it becomes relevant.

Thanks in advance, I do have the results of the last VCDS I ran which I'll paste below for anyone that fancies an extra read! :-)

Hi Crasher, thanks very much for the reply. Yes, turned to the second position so dash lights on. I used an older version of VCDS and seemed to get more information but then upgraded to this version which seemed "cleaner"?

Sorry, I should have pointed out that the car now cranks but no longer starts, so the car was as switched on as I could get it!

Hi Crasher, I'm at work at the moment but I believe it's a HEXCAN? I did check it against the version of VCDS, I know that 18.9 and above has some specific requirements which I thought my interface was fine with.

The starting and then stopping could be a problem with the transponder in the key. Do you have a spare key you can try?

On the dash there will be a warning light which is car shaped with a key symbol. This will stay on after the others have gone out.

Hi suityou01, thanks for the reply. I should probably have been a bit clearer with the current state of the car, my fault. Right now if I try and unlock the car, the indicators flash but the doors don't unlock. I then have to manually unlock the car.

At the moment, the following doesn't work on the car:

Central locking, both from fob, key and button in car
    Interior lights
    Alarm/Horn sound
    Windows
Door sensors, but does know if bonnet and boot are open
    Engine won't start

As I've been trouble shooting a new issue has appeared which is when I put the key in the ignition the rear windscreen wiper comes on even though the stalk is off.

    Things that do work:

    Engine cranks
    MFD works
    Headlights
    Indicators

Thanks for the suggestion, when this first began, I had the same thought and did try both keys.

    Appreciate the responses

If the dash immobilser is triggered the engine will start and then stop within a second plus the key warning light will flash... although why can you communicate with the instruments and not the immobiliser? If VCDS cannot see the CAN BUS, how did it know the car is a manual and not an auto, the list of controllers would have had 02 and it picked up it is a 7N CAN unit in a 1T, something very odd going on. If it turns over that means the J682 relay is being powered and commanded so the line 15 feed from fuse SC12 is ok and so it is presumably powering the line 15 realy. It also means line 50 is from the central electrics (BCM) is working at this provides the starter relay signal so this shows the J527 steering column controller is working and is sending the start signal to the central electrics which on cars WITHOUT stop/start is direct by a red/black wire and my mind has just said ignition switch failure, it is common on the PQ35 platform. If the switches line 15 output was faulty and only line 50 was working, you would get the same scan result, except for the engine.

I would love to get my teeth into that one, I love electrical conundrums but for now, I would fit a new ignition switch, bit of a pain to do the first time but when you know how you can do one in an hour, part number 1K0 905 849 B, £47.58

Hi Crasher, thanks for the reply. I've got no problem fitting one of these myself, happy to give it a go as it's become a bit of a mission! The thing I don't get is why no interior lights, are they affected by the ignition switch? And with an earlier version of VCDS I seemed to get more information. Perhaps I should upload the results from an earlier VCDS? As in, go home, downgrade, re-run the scan. On 18.9 it complains that Autocan is not supported and I have to choose my chassis. On earlier versions, autocan was fine. Confused, I am!
