Is my BCM faulty? - VW 2.0 TDI Touran 2011

I just fitted a new ignition switch on the weekend. Absolute pig of a job. What I learned was this :

You have to remove the steering wheel. This required a small flat blade screwdriver inserted into two holes in the back of the steering wheel which are exposed by rotating the wheel 90 degrees in either direction. There are clips that need to be pushed down to release the airbag unit. For Pete's sake disconnect the battery, both positive and negative before attempting this.

Once this is off you also need an M12 splined socket to remove the steering wheel bolt.

Once the wheel is off you can undo the 2 torx bolts holding the bottom cowel on.

Be careful not to dislodge the "clockspring" behind the wheel. Maybe a bit of masking tape to hold it in place. Mine fell out and I had to wind the ribbon cable back in. I was very nearly in tears.

I managed to remove the ignition switch without removing the barrel, but I would recommend removing the barrel if you are not sure. This requires removing the steering module (clip round the back, and one at the front you will need to insert a screwdriver to get at. Also will need to unclip the clockspring assembly from the steering column surround.

As I say, this is a pig of a job. First, can we check that all the things that are powered on by the ignition switch are getting some volts, then no need to replace the switch!

I have a trusty Haynes comic arriving this evening from Amazon, and will be scrutinising the ignition circuits for my own purposes but will make a list of fuses and or check points to take readings with your multimeter.

One final point I would make, check all your fuses. There are many fuses that provide power to the ECU and associated control gear. Just a simple check of all the fuses in the fuse board next to the battery would be a quick and logical step to take. There is also a drivers side fuse board that should be examined, but I don't think there's anything in there that would matter in this context.

In particular I would be looking at F4,5,6,7,9,10,11,12,16 (although as crasher says this module is working),24,26 (unless 1.6L).

Thank you for the link, very useful, I do have a Haynes manual and the wiring diagrams seem pretty good, assuming they are accurate of course! I've tested each fuse visually and using a multi-meter for continuity but I did order some new fuses which I might fit anyway! I'll pay particular attention to the ones you've mentioned. I''ve had the BCM and Gateway out and visually checked them but I haven't looked at the ECU. Considering this is under the windscreen is it possible this could have suffered some water damage? The passenger foot-well was soaked and there was a little water under the gateway when I first removed it, but dry as a bone inside. We have since unplugged the drainage holes under the windscreen and dried out the passenger side!

I used 18.9.1 on a Seat Ibiza and a Golf 7 R today and it is fine, do the very latest update which came out today and see what that says. Who's cable is it?

One thing I do see is that the date seems to be totally wrong, in the future for most faults, does this mean anything?

Edit: Just a point to note, at the moment I don't have the switch for the headlights or the rotary control for the instrument cluster brightness connected.

Get a battery charger on it, 11.6 volts is not enough BUT it will crank the starter, roll on electric autonomous cars, ohh are they going to be fun-we will be treating them like washing machines...

Hi Crasher, there are not far away! This is a new battery, I suppose we could have worn it down with all the testing? The car hasn't even been driven with this battery in it!

Having sifted through your VagCom output I can see that T30 is low or open.

According to the diagrams, 12.42 - Starting and charging - February 2003 to April 2010

T30 is a supply relay. This could well be giving you the low voltage on the other components mentioned (some of them at least, but I'll get to that)

The relay is supplied from the steering column control unit. The steering column control unit is fed from the ignition switch.

The ignition switch feeds the following terminals on the steering column control unit :

15, P, X, 50, S

I'm not sure how recognisable these are when you take the plug off, but certainly I would be trying to check for voltage on these pins with the ignition turned on.

Not also that T30 feeds the Diesel Direction Injection System Control unit, but I do not see that listed among the faults. The implications of this not working are fairly obvious.

Now onto the central locking and interior lights. I can see that all the door control units are low or open :

01331 - Door Control Module; Driver Side (J386)
004 - No Signal/Communication

01332 - Door Control Module; Passenger Side (J387)
004 - No Signal/Communication

01333 - Door Control Module; Rear Left (J388)
004 - No Signal/Communication

01334 - Door Control Module; Rear Right (J389)
004 - No Signal/Communication

These are all fed from the "Convenience System Central Control Unit" which can be found behind the glove box, which is passenger side - where you mentioned water ingress.

In answer to your question, the ECU can fill up with water and malfunction, but your VagCom does not list any faults with the ECU itself. Of course a knackered ECU might not own up to being knackered on the VagCom, but considering none of your failing systems are part of the ECU system I think for now you should not rip off your wipers and start stripping down the under windscreen cover.

It would nice to have a diagram from the T30 perspective, but while there is no such thing I shall pore over the remaining wiring diagrams to see if this is a common theme, perhaps T30 is the culprit for the whole shebang.

For the mean time, try and check those voltages to the Steering Column Control unit, and look for signs of water ingress in the vicinity of the Convenience System Control Unit.

Terminal 30 is fed from a relay, R4 on the diagram 12.29.

This is labelled "Ignition main circuits relay 1" on the web site I linked to. This relay sends power to fuse 12, Diesel Direct Injection System Control unit. With the key turned, check for voltage across fuse 12. No voltage, replace the relay.

Thanks very much for all the info, I won't get a chance to properly look until the weekend.

The first thing I went looking for was the Convenience Control Module which used to be under the carpet in the passenger foot-well as I understand it. Are you sure it's behind the glove box, I'd assumed they'd shifted it to under the steering column for my 2011 model and thought that the BCM and CCM were one and the same? I'll feel like a right idiot if there's another module I'm yet to find! My money was on a wet CCM from the get go!

According to the wiring diagram for the 2011 model there is no CCM at all! For 2006-2010 there is a CCM and it says it is indeed behind the glovebox.

For the 2010 onwards, it is Fuse 47 (30A) that feeds the Driver's door control unit, F49 that feeds the passenger's door control unit.
