I am a new Audi Owner having just bought a 1991 A6 allroad yesterday. I already like the car a lot but one thing I miss from my previous car (which unfortunately broke down and was uneconomic to repair) is the rear parking sensors - the kind that beep as you get close to an obstruction and then change to a continuous tone when you are closer still.

I know the A6 had this as an option, but whoever bought mine new didn't order it. Has anyone tried retrofitting the official version?

I am also sure there must be aftermarket products to do this, in fact I am not sure the system on the previous car was original as it seems to be connected to a sounder that is loose in one of the cubby holes at the back so I am wondering if I could salvage that from the old car and fit it to the new one. What I have no idea about is how the sensors would attach to the bumper. On the old car it looks like they are pushed into holes drilled in the bumper but if so what material is it? What would I drill it with and would this need the bumper off the car? Is there foam behind the bumper etc.

Has anyone done this or knows more about how it could be done?

If fitting original sensor system, you will need to change both front and rear bumpers. The sensors clip into sockets from the back of the bumpers. The end sensors have different brackets to the middle ones to accomodate fitting to the different locations - there is a lattice design of plastic on the inside of the bumpers. You need to check the OEM cabling loom also comes with the sensor switch which fits besides the hanbrake. You will also need to connect it to the appropriate systems management module (dont know which one!) as when fitted, the parking sensor system becomes part of the overall diagnostic/warning system.
You should be able to get used bumpers from a breaker - routing the cabling loom is going to be the biggest issue. And if you go this far, you should also get VCDS to run the diagnostics to confirm system installed correctly. MAYBE EASIER TO JUST BE CAREFUL WHEN PARKING!
