    Hi

Car is fitted with Xenon dipped headlight and standard main beam. The main beam seem to give a lot of light out in a full 360deg but barely light up any further distance wise than the dipped headlights. I had the alignment checked and they were found to b high, they were lowered but with very little discernible difference. As I understand it when adjusting the height of the main beam you are actually moving the mirror. How does this interact with the xenons as the xenons are self levelling? I'm thinking of spending an hour or two one evening lowering the lights myself and going for a drive to check for any improvement but wanted to check if there is anything related to the xenons I need to be aware of.

I've also read that Halogens bulbs deteriorate over time, mine have never been changed on an '05 so wondering if actually this could be an issue though I'm a little sceptical that an old bulbs would deteriorate this much.

    Any thoughts appreciated...

The headlights have auto levelling, set by the levelling sensor on the front and rear suspension.

My understanding was that the auto levelling only affected the xenons (dipped headlights) and not the main beam. My issue is with the main beam seeming to be not as good as it should be.

I THINK the problem here is that you don't actually have Xenon headlights, just normal halogen units. According to ETKA and ELSA, the 4F never had mixed Xenon/halogen, just full halogen H7 dip (which is projector so LOOKS like Xenon), H1 main or full Xenon on cars with with dynamic range/cornering control. If you private message me your reg number I can check which headlights are fitted.

So, you have “Pr-8Q5 Dynamic headlight range control, with cornering light (AFS 1)” with 4F0 941 029 CR and 4F0 941 030 CR lights (now suffix EH) and these use one D2S bulb per unit for dip and main. This is a quick copy and paste of the procedure from ELSA without the pictures (time to go home)

    Requirements for checking and adjusting

     Tyre pressure OK
 Headlight lenses must not be damaged or dirty.
     Reflectors and bulbs OK
     Vehicle correctly loaded.
Vehicle loading: with one person or 75 kg on driver's seat, otherwise vehicle unloaded (unladen weight).
The unladen weight is the weight of the vehicle ready for operation with full fuel tank (at least 90 %) including the weight of all equipment normally carried (e.g. spare wheel, tools, jack, fire extinguisher).
If the fuel tank is not at least 90 % full, put in additional weight as follows:
    – Read off fuel tank level at fuel gauge in dash panel insert, refer to table of capacities to find out additional weight and place required weight in luggage compartment → Chapter.

 Roll vehicle several metres or depress front and rear springs fully several times so that springs settle correctly.
 Vehicle and headlight adjustment unit must be on a level surface → Operating instructions for headlight adjustment unit.

 Vehicle and headlight adjustment unit must be aligned correctly with each other.
Ensure that headlight adjustment unit is in front of headlight at a distance of 30 cm.
 Dip setting must be adjusted.
Dip settings (in “%”) are marked on the top of the headlight. The headlights must be adjusted in accordance with these values. The percentage value is for a range of 10 m. Example: Converting a dip setting of 1.0 % = 10 cm.
    Table of quantities

Fuel tank level displayed on fuel gauge Front-wheel drive

Additional weight in kg Four-wheel drive

    Additional weight in kg
    1/4 55 60
    1/2 35 40
    3/4 20 20
    Full 0 0

    Example:
If fuel tank is half full, place an additional weight of 35 kg into luggage compartment.
    Note
It is advisable to use fuel canisters filled with water as additional weight (a 5 ltr. fuel canister filled with water weighs approx. 5 kg).

    Checking headlight settings
    – Switch on ignition and dipped headlights.
    – Start engine, wait for headlights to complete reference run and then switch engine off again.
    – Switch on ignition and dipped headlights.

 The horizontal light-dark border should coincide with the setting line -1- of the test surface.
 The break-away point -2- between the horizontal section of the light-dark border on the left and the rising section on the right should coincide with the vertical line running through the central point -3-. The bright spot in the centre of the beam should be to the right of the vertical line.
    Note
 To make it easier to find the break-away point -2-, cover and uncover the left half of the headlight (as seen in direction of travel) a few times. Then check the dipped beam again.
 If dipped beams have been adjusted correctly the centre point of the main beam should lie on central point -3-.
 If using an old test screen with a 15 ° setting line, the adjustment procedure is the same as for the new screen. Disregard the 15° setting line to avoid incorrect settings.
    – If headlight setting is not OK, adjust headlights → Chapter.

    Adjusting headlights
    – Connect vehicle diagnostic tester → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

    – Select Diagnosis mode and start diagnosis.
    – Select Test plan tab.
    – Select Own test then the following options one after the other:
     Body
     Electrical system
     01 - Self-diagnosis compatible systems
     55 - Dynamic headlight range control
 J431/J745 - Dynamic headlight range control, functions
 J431/J745 - Control unit for headlight range control, basic setting
    Note
With this programme the headlights return to the basic setting.
    – Continue to follow the instructions on the display of the vehicle diagnostic tester.
    – You will be requested to perform headlight adjustment while running through the programme.

    Headlight (left-side)
    Adjuster screws on left headlight:
    1 - Height adjuster screw
    2 - Height/lateral adjuster screw
The arrangement on the right headlight is symmetrically opposite.
    – To adjust height, turn adjuster screws -1- and-2- the same number of turns.
    – For lateral adjustment, turn only adjustment screw-2-.
