    Hi,

About a month ago the car died at the road side, in terms of not turning over on a warm start. My wife abandoned the vehicle and I went out that evening with a mate and some jump leads. Car started, assumed lots of school runs had goosed the battery. Took it for a long run and all was well. The wife did report at the time that the car was going bananas when trying to start, with the dash lit up like a Christmas tree, the radio turning on and the headlights turning on even though the switch was in the off position.

Started the car 2 weeks ago, and the starter sounded like it was labouring and there was an electrical burning smell in the cabin. Still started and all was well until last Thursday when again it wouldn't turn over and again the car was abandoned. A jump start didn't work this time.

I removed the starter, and the solenoid smelt very strongly of the same burning smell I got in the cabin, so I replaced it. The car started first time with no issues, no labouring. After letting it run for a few minutes and resetting the clock etc I turned it off and tried to start it again. You guessed it. Not turning over.

The airbag, abs and traction control lights are on and don't go out.

Put a VAG reader on it and got 4 lovely error codes for each glow plug :

    17055, 17056, 17057, 17058

Utterly baffled as I don't see how glow plugs stop it turning over.

Its old battery most likely causing electrical errors.
Dont judge battery just by its capability to turn starter motor.

Makes sense, and thank you for your reply. If it doesn't turn over for a jump start, wouldn't this indicate the problem may be something other than the battery? (Note it does bump start)

Since you already worked on starter I would say its not the problem now. And dead battery explaine electrical errors.

Chech wiring to starter and solenoid you changed as after it was changed starter worked. Check fuses and relays. Instrument cluster is lighting up as usual?

Instrument panel has engine management, airbag and traction control lights left on after the others go out.

    Wiring to starter is fine.

Fuse for auxiliary heater blown, now replaced.

After startup those lights go away?
You need electrician to check why starter is not turning, it might not get signal, there can be wiring issues, starter itself can be broken. Befour you had instrument cluster light up as christmas tree if battery wasnt at fault there is some electric problem.
