After 44,460 miles, Ive had the brake-pad warning come up.

One dealer has quoted me £550 full incl. to fit the front pads.

Anybody else changed their pads yet?

Yup, front and rear...i‘m at 80000km now. I found some aftermarket ones for the rear axle...they are just as good but only costed about 100€ I believe.

Try to find Textar for front and TRW for rear. These pads are cheaper and the same as OEM but without Audi logo. Warning sensors you can use from producer called ABS. This is not a “rocket science “ and these ABS sensors are very cheap comparing to OEM.
All this stuff you will find easily on eBay.

Just had pads and discs all round at 38k, so congrats on getting to 44k.

£550 just for front pads sounds a bit steep, but I won't go into how much I've just paid, let's just saw, ouch!

I need to do pads all round and rear discs at 38.5k miles. Dealer wants over £1,100 so I politely declined.

Any specialist tools needed to do it myself? Is the electronic handbrake an issue?

Front is easy. You don’t need any specialist tools except the device for retraction of the pistons and the torque wrench. But even without these tools you can do it. Rear is not so easy. For rear you also need a computer with the software to open the handbrake. VCP has this option in OCF procedures, perhaps VCDS or OBD11 too.
