    Hi All,

Has anyone done a cambelt change using the "audi" method (as per elsawin) of putting the front into the service position - is there enough room (garages etc seem to take the radiator off which I want to avoid)?

Car is A4 Cab 2.4 (BDV engine).

    Thanks in advance,

    W.

I've done it on my 1.8 straight four engine, which may be longer than yours, meaning you have more space, with no particular problem.

You should make sure that the "lock carrier" is held as far forward as possible by using nuts on the threaded studs used to support it.

We have done hundreds of Audi and VW V6 cam belts and the service position allows plenty of room. Using the correct locking tools and releasing the cam pulleys is quite important on these engines or you can get crank to cam sync errors.

I use a pair of vice grips on the sleeve to hold the system forwards against the pull of hoses and to stop it sliding back when leaning on it

This is an AKE block but the idea is the same

The only time we ever have to take the front end off is when some moron has previously ruined the crank sprocket bolts as there is not enough room in the service position to attack them, we do this without disturbing the ac circuit, like on this Passat
