    Hi All,

    Happy New Year.

We have recently acquired a 2000 Golf Cabriolet 1.8 with the AAM engine with about 100k miles on the clock.

I have been having on going cooling issues with it and I am hoping someone here may be able to shed some light on it.

When we got it there was a hole in the radiator and it looks like the owner had been running it on short journeys too and from work without noticing the problems.

    So far we have:-

    1. Changed the radiator
    2. Changed the fan switch that was broken
    3. Changed the head gasket and skimmed the warped head
    4. Changed the thermostat
    5. Removed and flushed the internal heater core

At the moment it seems to be taking ages for the engine to warm up. I know it is cold outside at the moment, but even after a 4 mile hard thrash the temperature gauge has hardly moved off zero - leaving it parked ticking over I do start to hear the fan tripping on after a few minutes.

The main problem is the lack of heat in the cabin whereas previous cabriolets we have had have all warmed up pretty quickly.

The cooling system was stuffed with some major crud which prompted us to remove the heater core from the cabin and thoroughly flush it out so we have good flow through it, but still not much heat in to the cabin - both pipes getting too hot to touch so the heat is getting up to it.

    Any other suggestions?

    Many thanks.

I have moved this into Golf 3 as the 1E cabrio is technically a Golf 3 with the facelift giving a Golf 4 look.

The matrix used in the Golf 3 is the same as the Golf 2 and is prone to getting blocked, no amount of flushing with high pressure air, water, chemicals or explosives will get it clear as it is an anti burst top flow design, one the U tubes are blocked that's it. It is a shane you did not fit a new one when it was out, they are only about £25 EIS Heater Matrix | Euro Car Parts.
