I agree that something must have caused the rail pressure too high code however it hasn't appeared again but the cut out fault is still there all the time.

I had a new ECU supplied but it was a clone of mine so if there was a software error it would have been transferred over. It made no difference so we went back to the original and then I had the software rollback. This made a noticeable improvement to the low end performance but ultimately didn't change the fault.

More down low performance because its pre-emission fix now, but your cut out issue is weird indeed.

From your message I can tell that you have not changed the high pressure fuel pump, you have changed the in tank and supplementary (AKA pump 2) fuel pumps. The supplementary pumps hardly ever fail, some versions don't even have them, the HPFP is driven by the cam belt.

Sorry if I confused things, the Hpfp has definitely been changed, once for a second hand one and then a remanufactured one with no change to the symptoms.
We also exchanged the other two pumps in case it was a problem with the low pressure supply to the Hpfp.

    ITS FIXED!
6 months, 4 different mechanics including a deisel injection specialist, and none of them noticed that someone had removed the pressure retention vessel in the return fuel line, it's only as the last place sent it back without the engine cover that I noticed it.
Even now I know what it was I can still find no reference to this fault on any forums. Apparently the return fuel line has to be at a minimum 10bar for piezo injectors to function properly.
The pressure retention vessel and return fuel lines have no sensors or monitoring so the very occasional p0088 fault code was the only indication that anything was wrong other than the engine constantly cutting out under acceleration and boost.
I'm rambling a bit now as I want to include as many terms that I searched when trying to find this fault in the hope that it will help someone else in the future!

Thanks all for your help and direction of my thinking back towards the fuel system when I was being told I needed a new turbo!

Do you mean the injector return line set 03L 130 235 K? Upto 15/04/09 production these were troublesome and I have seen people take the return valve out and replace it with normal hose.

Its still very interesting and confusing how it tricked the ECU to miss lack of pressure or actual amount of fuel for injectors.

Yes that's exactly the part and the retention valve HAD been removed with a little inline connector put in its place. I fitted the new part in 5min outside the supplier and it was an instant fix.

I think it's because the rail pressure was fine, this is on the return line. The only occasionally abnormal reading must have been as the rail pressure relief valve opened so was briefly affected by the incorrect flow in the return line.
