    Hi

Iv had the car a couple of years steering column done last year thats the only thing done so far,

At the wkend over took a car and the car wouldn't change up from 3 to 4th and the PRNDS stayed solid so I plugged it in and it said 3-4 upper limit exceeded so I cleared the fault and went out next day to try it soon as it tries to go from 3-4th PRNDS stays on so I was driving home before I got there the drive stopped like I was in neutral engine still running nothing else, i reset fault again but nothing
Ive been searching for a couple of days for answers but not alot of info on the quattro gearbox, do these gearboxes have the TCM on the back of the gearbox if it is I havent found it, not under the carpet either no one Iv asked can say so Im hoping someone can on here

    Thanks for any help

You have a ZF 6HP19A gearbox. The TCM is located inside the box, mounted to the mechatronic unit (that's valve body in old speak).

You have internal gearbox issues. Something fairly serious, but I'm guessing it's either a breakdown of pressure from the pump, a breakdown internal to the mechatronic valving, or a blown seal or clutch pack in the box.
The shift from 3rd to 4th on these boxes disengages B clutch and engages E clutch. E clutch is a known weak point, I believe due to a seal which can fail. Once the seal fails the clutch pack doesn't hold pressure and slips, therefore you're getting a code for slip.

Others can advise if it's worth trying to remedy the mechatronic unit, which can be done without removing the entire box. Some folks have had success before with replacing solenoids, but that's usually for harsh shifts or shift flare, not complete loss of drive.

Google for the following files which shall give you more information:
    "ZF_Workbook-transmission-6-8HP.pdf"
    "SSP385" - the 6HP19A is an "09L"
    "2011_Presentation_AutoChoice.pdf"

I would recommend finding a decent gearbox place and getting their opinion.

    Good luck

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply,

Iv been searching for parts since your reply and how to repair it so I've found the solenoids and the 4 sleaves 1 adapter seal all ZF parts, couple days I should know if it will work again,

When it stopped working it felt like a seal or something let go

Let us know how it goes. I do hope the solenoid service does help. I assume you're getting the correct sleeves and adapter seals? The ones from a BMW spec 6HP19, which are spoken about a lot more on the internet, are not compatible.
The adapter seal for a 6HP19A is a lot taller, sort of 80mm Vs 20mm of the BMW one (not exact measurements, but for perspective sake)
The sleeves are also just straight pieces of tube, where the BMW ones are like little fittings with a notch sticking out of them.
The solenoids are the same, you just need to make sure you get the correct combination for your main parts listing.

Ok, great. In that case they probably sent you the correct parts.

There most certainly are 4 sleeves in there. The circlips and springs hold them in, but they are a tight fit so they don't just slide out. You pull them out with a hook. I've made one before with some stiff wire. Use the new ones as a guide for how big you want to make the hook. I made it so that the hook went in and then when I pulled it out it caught on the ID, like a fish hook principal sort of.
When you push the new ones in, use a 10mm or so socket to make sure they are seated home. Otherwise there will be no initial pressure transfer to the clutches
You should have 3 short ones and 1 long one. Just little round tubes.
