    Hi all,
I'm considering a B8 S line 2008-2011. What experience do people have with the petrol engines? They do seem to have problems unfortunately and that is what puts me off. Out of the variants 1.8 (120, 160) and 2.0, which is the most recommended?

Also are there any other issues in general with the B8 which I should be aware of?

    Many thanks.

The 2.0l CDNC engine can be a bit troublesome. I had the 211bhp version and it had to be taken back to Audi a few times. That being said, it is a very fun engine (go for Quattro if you can as well).

I've moved on to a 3.0tdi A4 B8, despite the extra power I do occasionally miss my old car.

The B8 in general is great in my opinion

Yeah I’ve mainly read about the heavy oil consumption due to piston ring design. Was that only the 2.0 TFSI though?

I’ve also heard of timing chain issues. Anyway, the 1.8 responds really well to a remap so that is a potential choice..

I drive a 2010 1.8TFSI CVT it is a great car, so quiet and has enough torque for overtaking quite confidently. Personally i'd recommend not going CVT box for as they are very expensive to replace, i don't have any issues with mine but they don't like tuning so i'm stuck with my standard bhp.

What do you mean they don’t like tuning? And yeah I’ve been looking at the 1.8. Most are the 120bhp versions though.

Lots of bad stories related to the CVT box and remapping have a google b8, remap, cvt, tfsi. I will leave my tuning stock, what i have done though is cut the rear muffler off, added a Jetex panel filter and currently waiting on some time to install a GFB DV+ diverter valve. Rear muffler off gives a lovely note without sounding like your trying to be a WRX. The 1.8 is a very good engine in my book and from what i have read online, only thing is the lack of torque and not so good fuel economy if your coming from a diesel, i get around 40mpg on screen average during my drive to work which is 10 miles of relatively straight A roads. My 1.8 is actually the 160ps but i'm not sure of the difference between it and the 120. I'd be interested in your progress with it if you buy, not many 1.8tfsi about.

Have you had any oil consumption or timing chain issues? What model year is your car?

The engine does seem good although torque isn’t that high. Stage 1 remap would sort that out though like I said earlier.

I’ve been having a look on Autotrader and the likes and though there is quite a few 1.8tfsi’s for sale, most are 120ps. The 160ps are not really well specc’d. S line, rear sensors, heated seats are the main things I want. You’d be surprised how many of them don’t have that spec!

I have a 2010 Avant SE with parking sensors, no issues with oil or timing chain, it's got full Audi history and I still take it there. One thing I do have is a steering noise same as this video Audi A4 B8 - 1N3 Steering Rack noises. - YouTube other than that it's all good.

Here's one local to me https://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/audi-a4-18t-fsi-160ps-2009my-se/1324017224
